With close to 20 years in the fashion industry, I've not only seen it all—but also know how to parse through the endless sea of stuff. What's worth buying? What's not? In Self Checkout, you'll find my highly specific recommendations with a few picks from my most knowledgeable, stylish friends. This week we're talking about my beauty buys—a special request from Hillary Kerr, host of Second Life and Who What Wear podcasts, author of always clicked-on newsletter Hi Everyone with Hillary Kerr, and my wonderful boss. Now, I have to admit I'm not a beauty junkie and actually use very few products. But as you've probably come to figure out, I'm very particular and have lots of thoughts—so let's get into it.

My Five Minute Face

So, because I spent this past year really concentrating on my skin (using valuable products, but also drinking far more water out of my trusty Nalgene), I've found that I don't need as much makeup as I did in the past. My five-minute face always starts with filling in my eyebrows. By nature they are skinny and unruly (terrible combination) but I've figured it out with a small brush and NARS Graffiti shadow (a matte deep brown color) from the Voyager eyeshadow palette. Unfortunately, this palette is sold out, but MAC Cosmetic's shadow in the color Brun is a good alternative.

I've written ad nauseum about my love of Merit's The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick (in case you missed it, this stick revolutionized my entire makeup routine!) but I'm also a big fan of the Flush Balm Cream Blush in Apres. A five-year-old could apply this in the dark and still look great. I'm not particular about mascara, but my friend Sharifa Murdock recently gifted me this one from Buxom and I'm blown away. I would definitely purchase it with my own money. I am, however, extremely particular about eyeliner (liquid, jet black always, hard pen tip) and this ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Point Made Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Pen is a new favorite.

Finally, the lip. If you haven't tried it I IMPLORE you to pick up Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Hot Chocolit, a shimmering rich brown shade that probably looks great on all skin tones, but is a secret weapon of black fashion and beauty editors alike. Red lipstick-wise, The Lip Bar's Matte Liquid Lipstick, Sephora Collection's Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in Red Desert, Dries Van Noten's Favorite Red and Prada Monochrome Hyper Matte lipstick in R28 are mainstays in my makeup bag.

The Holy Grail for Regrowing My Hair

One day earlier this year, my hair stylist commented that my hair seemed a little thinner than usual. It wasn't exactly falling out in clumps, but it was definitely shedding on wash days and was a cause for concern. She suggested I try hair vitamins, so off to Sephora I went to find something to use. A friend who had a similar hair loss situation post-giving birth suggested Nutrafol (it worked and she went from a pixie to a fabulous bob in six months), but I went with Vegamour because it's a) cheaper and b) less pills to take every day. After three months of usage, there was a noticeable difference in both thickness and how how quickly my hair grew. To be honest, I was initially skeptical of how well these would work, but in the end I was very impressed.

Rose Ingleton MD Everything

At the top of 2023 I decided I was really going to concentrate on the health of my skin—regularly seeing a dermatologist for check-ins and also monthly facials. Enter Dr. Rose Ingleton, derm to highly discerning New Yorkers and celebs alike. Dr. Ingleton's products are infused with a blend of fruit extracts native to her home island of Jamaica and are great for dry, dull skin. When I first started seeing Dr. Ingleton, my routine was vast (I fell for the more-products-the-better school of thought), but now we've pared it down to her signature moisturizer and Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen in the morning and in the evening, then washing with her Superfruit Gentle Brightening Cleanser and one of her serums at night, based on what's going on with my skin at the time. My favorites are the Calming Hydration booster, Retexturizing Retinol Booster, and Complexion Brightening Booster Serum. Overall I've seen less breakouts and much smoother, brighter skin.

A Face Oil for Extra Dry Skin Days

There's no sugarcoating it, folks, Agustinus Bader products are expensive. The very definition of the word splurge, but I'm sharing this face oil because I really, truly love it. I mean, I could try and justify the price with a cost-per-wear, girl math-y little write-up, but I'd rather be honest up front (big "it is what it is" energy) and present to you why I think it's worth it! First, you don't need to use a lot of it to get that hydrated feeling I'm sure you're looking for when it's 32 degrees outside and you've battled the most windy of days. Additionally, even though it's a face oil I never feel greasy after using it. The oil settles nicely into the skin, making it great for daytime usage or at night instead of a super rich night cream. Lastly, you guys know how much I travel (at least once a month, often long-haul) and it does wonders on flights. This is pretty much the only thing I need to apply to ensure I stay moisturized and land looking somewhat refreshed.

This week we're switching things up! Instead of 3 picks from one of my friends, I'm sharing The MC50, a list of Marie Clarie Editors' favorite stuff—from fashion, beauty, wellness, and culture—that we think is worth your money and attention. Personal favorites include Gucci loafers, this J.Crew cashmere sweater, and Greta Lee's incredible performance in Past Lives, but the entire story is worth a read. You'll find life-saving gems throughout.
